Kao Kalia Yang - Renowned Speaker
Description
KAo Kalia yang has written a moving portrait of her Hmong family. It is the story of their harrowing escape from the war torn jungles of Laos, their life in the crowded refugee camps of Thailand and finally, their move to a new way of living in Minneapolis.
She was born in 1980, in Thailands Ban Vinai Refugee Camp. Along with thousands of other Hmong families, Yang and her family immigrated to the USA. In 1987, her family came to St. Paul, MN. Yang and her extended family, held together by her grandmother, learned to survive in new ways. There was hardship and joy in this new home, with the school experiences of the children at the core, especially for Yang.
Kao Kalia is a graduate of Carleton College and she holds a MFA in Creative Non- fiction Writing from Columbia University in New York. Her memoir, The Latehomecomer, weaves Hmong folklore and culture into the storyling in an intimate, lyrical style. She has also released a film, The Place Where We Were Born, documenting the experiences of Hmong refugees. To learn more about Yang, visit www.kaokaliayang.com.
