The Third World: Abject Poverty or Poverty with Dignity
Dr. Jackie Brux is a development economist with research focusing on Africa. She is also the Co-director of the UWRF Association for International Development. Her topic, "The Third World: Abject Poverty or Poverty with Dignity" reflects her growing philosophy of what constitutes poverty with dignity and what constitutes radical change. Using the example of microcredit for women and women's groups in Kenya and Uganda, she argues that the sustainable redistribution of resources to poor women, made possible by microcredit, can indeed create the kind of fundamental change necessary to improve living conditions in East Africa
